Is Flogging A Child A Way Of Training and Discipline?

While some folks see flogging as an uncivil way of punishing a child or a wrongdoer, a court in Abuja deemed it fit as the best punishment for a 19-year old.

On Tuesday 23rd August 2016, a teenager, Salisu L. was convicted and sentenced to four strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of criminal trespass and attempt to commit felony.

A Grade 1 Area Court, Karmo, Abuja, convicted Salisu for obeying the devil’s dictate and trespassing into a private property, which was kept in reserve.

After the judgement of flogging, which seemed quite trivial for the offense, the Area court judge, Abubakar Sadiq, warned the convict to desist from committing further crimes, although, he hoped that Salisu’s judgment would serve as the deterrent to other would-be offenders.

Flogging, best punishment or not?

Earlier, the prosecutor, Zannah Dalhatu, told the court that Anagor Chuks of Area 11 Garki, Abuja, reported the matter at Utako Police Station, Abuja, on August 20.

Dalhatu said the complainant, a security guard at Sudan Street, Wuse, Zone 6, reported that the defendant jumped into the compound with an intention to steal. The complainant caught the defendant and took him to the police station. According to the law, the offense contravened sections 343 and 96 of the Penal Code and would have attracted a higher judgement if the offender was caught in the actual act of stealing.

Lawal had urged the court to temper justice with mercy, saying accusing the devil as the one who led him to jump the fence and that he had no intention to commit any crime. So the question is ‘if he didn’t plan to steal from the compound why did he jump into it?’
